Student Response Tools
Student response tools allow students to showcase their knowledge in a non-traditional way. In the past students were required to raise their hand before answering a question. With student response tools, students can now answer questions from the comfort of a device. In the classroom, students enter their comments on devices, then track their conversations on their individual device screens or watch live text of the emerging conversation on a display at the front of the class.
Some downsides of these systems include: students being required to provide their own device, problems with the WiFi connection, and the cost of providing devices for students. The great strength of open-ended student response systems may be that they create another avenue for discussion, allowing students to join a virtual conversation at those times when speaking out in live discourse might seem inappropriate, intimidating, or difficult. Finally, open-ended systems can increase student engagement, resulting in a stronger connection with the content and a feeling that they have a voice in the tone and direction of the class session.
